USA: The United Smartphones of America
Smartphone numbers will continue to enjoy incredibly strong growth in the US, but it will be the iPhone and Android that dominate the market moving forward. There will be a total of 117.9 million smartphones in the US in 2011, rising to 155.6 million in 2012, with smartphones becoming the dominant device category in 2012.
The total number of iPhones in the US will reach 33.57 million in 2011, equating to 28% of the smartphone market, rising to 42.98 million in 2012. With Android on 49 million users in 2011, it has become the dominant smartphone platform, and will only consolidate that position in 2012 when the number of Android devices will be 80.5 million 52% of all smartphones, and 25% of the total US mobile market.
This growth is having a phenomenal impact on mobile internet usage. In 2011, mobile internet penetration reached 41% in the US (129.99 million users), and will hit 48% in 2012 (158.9 million users). This is generating an incredible uplift in inventory, and having a powerful impact on mobile advertising spend.
Mobile banner ad spend will be $439.97 million and accounts for 33% of total mobile advertising in the US in 2011, worth $1.34 billion. mobileSQUARED forecasts that the total mobile advertising market in the US will jump to $2.01 billion in 2012, when mobile banner ad spend will contribute 32% of spend, generating revenues of $649.1 million.
“It’s exciting to see the US hitting $2 billion in mobile advertising spend next year. adsmobi is prepared to take an active role in driving this growth by supporting innovative and performance driven products such as Rich Media Ad Formats” stated Ramy Yared, Managing Director of adsmobi Inc.
